Trends Forecast: 2018

Trends Forecast: 2018

Happy Wednesday!  This week I am writing about trends that I am excited to see unfold in 2018.  I know- I know, we are only a month into the new year, how am I so sure what the trends are going to be?  Well so far we can take a look at what was hot in 2017, what fizzled out, and what is growing into the next trends to come.

I think it’s amazing how trends change so much year to year, and that is what makes the design industry so interesting (don’t even get me started on how fast fashion design trends come and go, they have like 8 seasons to design for in a year!)

The changing trends and styles keep designers on their toes, and it can be a challenge sometimes to pick your favorite furniture and finishes without knowing if they are going to even be in style in the years to come.

After doing some research and observations of my own, these are the top Interior Design trends I am most excited for:

1.       Art Nouveau With an Eclectic Upgrade

2017 was huge for the comeback of midcentury modern style furniture and décor.  MCM is still here to stay but I have noticed the spotlight has shifted to more Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, which I could not be more excited about.  I love the drama of these styles and it is so cool to pair them with more contemporary elements.  You will see a lot of these vintage furnishings reupholstered with bold fabrics, or repurposed to create a fun element in the room.

2.       Maximalism

This is the year that no one is afraid to use bold patterns and high contrasts.  The Pantone color of the year is Ultra Violet, and I never thought I would love it so much.  You will also see more drama within the architectural elements of interiors.  Ceilings were once upon a time the most forgotten part of an interior, but you almost can't go anywhere now without seeing a statement ceiling with beams, high contrasts or metallic tiles. Dark countertops and bold cabinet colors will also be popping up more in 2018.

3.       Monochrome

On the other side of the spectrum- neutral tones are still a hit.  You will notice more layering of monochrome colors, which will bring a neutral-colored space more to life.  I am in love with this trend and I believe it falls into the timeless design category.

4.       Comfort

Rather than flipping through magazines and almost every interior space looking so hard and shiny, you will notice rooms looking a little more lived-in and comfortable.  I could not be more excited about this, because it is totally my design style.  I love looking at a photo of a space and feeling like I could jump in and live in it, instead of scared to touch anything.  Rich texture and comfortable furniture pieces are huge and are seen in everything now from wool pillows and rugs, to velvet and fur (or faux) throws.

5.       Mixed Metals

I noticed the mixing of metals in a single room a bit in 2017, but now it is in full affect.  Mixing metals such as copper, bronze, silver, and even rose gold adds more depth to a space.  You know when you walk into a room and there is a full spectrum of metals that the owner is not afraid of anything.

6.       Recycled Material Trend Continues to Grow

The trend I am most excited about is the continued growth of using sustainable and recycled materials.  The concept of creating the least amount of waste is very important to us at AND Design.  We try our best to seek out furniture and décor companies that use recycled materials, low VOC's, and guarantee high quality so there is a longer lifetime and less waste.  We pay attention to sustainability even when we pick out our price tags and office supplies.  Every bit counts.  Repurposing vintage pieces is another way to contribute to eco-friendly design.
